The
Bible in Limerick Verse
The all new edition The Bible In Limerick Verse is available now from major on-line book stores and can be sourced by all bookshops. UK customers can order the book signed by the author, with an additional CD containing the Limerick Bible hymn and selected limerick readings by the author, for £11.50 which includes postage and packing. In a thousand-and-one catchy verses, very
easy to memorise, and fun to read - Christopher Goodwins has managed to
sum-up the major themes and people of the entire Bible. There's nothing particularly new about
writing Biblical hymns of 4, 6, or 8 line verses, but no one, until now,
has presented the Old Testament, The Apocrypha, and The New Testament in
so many 5-line Limerick verses. It started as a personal exercise in Lent
2001, to see whether the parables of Jesus could be easily memorised, and
presented attractively. In 2001, The New Testament in Limerick
Verse was published, arousing enormous interest worldwide, followed in
2002 by The Old Testament and The Apocrypha in Limerick Verse, and aimed
at people who might - but might not - read the Bible. It now makes common sense to combine
these two books into one - The Bible In Limerick Verse. This new edition
has therefore been completely revised, checked, and lengthened into what
is probably the record for the greatest number of Limericks ever published
by one author. It has already been welcomed by bishops and university professors, teachers and students, prison chaplains and theological college principals. Children will love it. Those unfamiliar with the Bible are intrigued by it. Travellers waiting at airports for flight connections could read it in a matter of a couple of hours. It could be given as a gift to parents at Baptisms, to candidates at Confirmation, and to couples at weddings. If you love Limericks, then this book will certainly surprise you, when you find how easy the Bible is to read! I can visualise people waiting in hotels or airport lounges for a connection in about three hours’ time, having nothing to occupy their minds. If they were to see this book, I reckon that they would read it very easily - from cover to cover! I can see it being really helpful to teachers, faced with a fourth-year class taking RE as the last period on a Friday afternoon in the heat of summer. I can envisage it lying around in doctors’ and dentists’ waiting rooms. This book could be of enormous help to clergy, in Confirmation preparation, or to people who have shied away from church, simply because some worship seems to be so dauntingly complicated and wordy. Yes - I know that some of the rhymes have been stretched to the limits, and in reading the them aloud, it may be necessary occasionally to accent a syllable or two, in order to make the rhythm fit better - but, as nobody has ever done this exercise before, then hopefully it’s better than nothing! I would like to thank Peter Wright, priest, for his encouragement and constructive criticism. He was the only person at my Theological College who had the ability to inspire me to get excited about The Bible! Finally, I would like to thank my wife, Doreen, for putting up with my single-mindedness, in getting the work completed, and for her patience in checking it, over and over again! I hope it encourages you to read the real thing! Christopher Goodwins |
