Clergy are very good at telling other people what to do, but in the Lent of 2001, Christopher thought that he himself would set the lead, by "doing something with his bible."

Many years ago he had put the parables of Jesus into limerick form, but in the five weeks before Easter Day 2001 he had "translated" the entire New Testament into limerick verse.

He and his wife Doreen turned out a few Desktop Publishing copies of the work, and sold them to church members.

The copy that he sent to "The Church Times" so impressed the editor, that it received unprecedented front-page treatment.

As a result, the Daily Telegraph followed suit, making it the leading article in "Peterborough's" column two days later.

From then on, the Press Association ensured that every major regional and national paper in the world featured the work.

Dozens of Radio and Press interviews, from Australia to Canada, took place in the three weeks that followed, culminating in Christopher and Doreen being invited as special guests on Channel 4 TV's "The Big Breakfast."

Inspired by such interest, Christopher and Doreen then worked flat out to meet 400 requests from all over the world for the home-made edition, until a publisher (John Hunt Publishing Ltd) bailed them out by offering to publish it.

Within three months of its launch in October 2001, The New Testament In Limerick Verse was on sale all over the world!

Since then, whilst in Florida, USA in November 2001, Christopher has given live interviews about the book, on Panama City Joy Radio FM, and also on Florida's Channel 7 TV.

After seeing The New Testament In Limerick Verse - many people suggested that the Old Testament and The Apocrypha should also be published in the same sort of format.

This part of the bible took Christopher three weeks to "translate" into limericks, between the 23rd July and the 15th August 2001.

The Old Testament and Apocrypha in Limerick Verse, launched in May 2002, is by no means perfect, but it does attempt to include the major themes and personalities of the Old Testament, and The Apocrypha.

Christopher had real problems with some of the names of people and places, but he hopes that, for reading out aloud, it is possible to make the limericks scan correctly, with a little practice.

Leviticus, Deuteronomy, and Chronicles posed enormous problems, with their sheer quantity of detail and repetition, and hence these books have been deliberately condensed.

By contrast, however, there is one limerick for each of the Psalms, and for the 119th Psalm, one for each section.

The Old Testament and Apocrypha in Limerick Verse has the same aim as its predecessor - to encourage people to read the real thing. If not - and if this is the only work that people ever read - then at least they will have gleaned a flavour of what the Old Testament and The Apocrypha are about.
